School is back in session, and we’re returning to the movies that made high school look a lot more interesting than it ever really was. The 2000s gave us cheer captains, Burn Books, revenge plots and school-wide drama that could spread before lunch.

So, consider this your syllabus. Here are five coming-of-age movies worth revisiting before the bell rings.

Bring It On (2000)

Bring It On gave the classic high school movie a little more spirit. When Torrance takes over as captain of the Toros, she learns that the routines behind their winning streak were stolen from the East Compton Clovers.

The movie has everything you want from the era: rivalries, romance, questionable fashion choices and a soundtrack that immediately takes you back. But it also knew that being the main character doesn’t automatically make you the good guy.

Mean Girls (2004)

There was no way we could make this list without Mean Girls. Cady Heron’s introduction to public school becomes an education of its own once she gets involved with Regina George and the Plastics.

Twenty years later, the Burn Book, pink Wednesdays and practically half the script still live in pop culture. Few movies understood just how ridiculous—and serious—high school popularity could feel when you were actually living through it.

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

Sometimes the most important thing you learn in high school is that the guy you’re dating has been treating monogamy like a group project.

John Tucker Must Die takes that discovery and turns it into an increasingly ridiculous revenge scheme against the school’s resident heartbreaker. It’s messy, extremely 2006 and exactly the kind of movie that makes you miss an era of teen comedies that weren’t afraid to have a little fun.

She’s the Man (2006)

When Viola’s girls’ soccer team is cut from the school’s program, she decides to disguise herself as her twin brother, Sebastian, and take his place at a rival boarding school. What starts as a plan to prove herself on the field quickly becomes much more complicated when she develops feelings for her roommate, Duke.

She’s the Man is peak 2000s teen comedy: Shakespearean inspiration, elaborate disguises, chaotic misunderstandings and a performance from Amanda Bynes that carries the entire movie. It’s ridiculous in the best way and still one of the era’s most endlessly quotable coming-of-age movies.

Easy A (2010)

By 2010, the high school rumor mill had gotten an upgrade. After one lie about her weekend spreads through school, Olive decides that if everyone is going to talk about her anyway, she might as well give them something to talk about.

Easy A is funny, self-aware and just dramatic enough for a movie centered around a rumor. Add Emma Stone, an embroidered scarlet A and one very memorable rendition of “Pocketful of Sunshine,” and you have the perfect final lesson.
