Two of pop music’s biggest names are raising the bar. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have reunited for a remix of Rodrigo’s “expectations,” released October 15 alongside a theatrical new music video. With a fresh verse from Roan and a playful visual featuring some familiar faces, the collaboration brings their longtime creative connection into the spotlight.

Great Expectations, Even Greater Company
Originally featured on Rodrigo’s third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, “expectations” explores the frustrations of wanting more from a relationship. The new remix, produced by longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, introduces Roan’s perspective through an entirely new second verse.
Roan brings her signature theatrical delivery to the track, recounting an underwhelming romantic encounter with a woman before joining Rodrigo on the chorus. The result is a collaboration that allows both artists to maintain their individual personalities while expanding on the original song’s narrative.
The release also marks a milestone in their shared history. Roan previously opened for Rodrigo on the SOUR Tour and GUTS World Tour, with both artists maintaining a close creative relationship through their work with Nigro.
The collaboration extends beyond the recording studio with a music video directed by Bardia Zeinali. Styled as a retro television game show, the visual finds Rodrigo and Roan competing through a series of absurd challenges, complete with elaborate costumes and exaggerated characters.

The video also features Talking Heads frontman David Byrne as fictional host Johnny Johnson, alongside a special appearance from Nigro. Its colorful sets and comedic performances complement the song’s themes, transforming romantic disappointment into an entertaining spectacle.

While the two artists have shared stages throughout their careers, the “expectations” remix marks their first officially credited release as a duo. Between Roan’s new verse and the accompanying visual, the collaboration offers a fresh interpretation of Rodrigo’s original track.
